The Purdue football team will honor perhaps the school’s most famous alumnus by wearing helmet stickers recognizing astronaut Neil Armstrong beginning this weekend against Notre Dame.

The stickers will remain on the helmet for the remainder of the season. The school announced the decision Monday.

According to Purdue, head coach Danny Hope shared Armstrong's accomplishments with the team following the astronaut's death on Aug. 25, and fifth-year senior receiver Tommie Thomas requested the team honor him.

The sticker will depict an astronaut with Armstrong’s name and the dates of his birth and death set against the American flag. Armstrong graduated from Purdue in 1955 and went on to become the first man to walk on the moon.

The Boilermakers defeated Eastern Kentucky 48-6 in their opener and travel to Notre Dame on Saturday.
