New Mexico Vs. Texas Final Score: recap

The No. 17 Texas Longhorns struggled in the first half, once again, before pulling away for a relatively easy 45-0 victory over the New Mexico Lobos on Saturday night in Austin, Texas.

The Longhorns fought through a slow start in Week 1 against Wyoming and Mack Brown's football team fell into the same trap against New Mexico, struggling to contain the Lobos triple-option offense in the first half. Texas would rely on a 49-yard run by David Ash and a 22-yard touchdown reception by Mike Davis to take a 17-0 lead into halftime after fighting to get into any rhythm on either side of the ball in the first two quarters of the game.

Yet again the Longhorns would wake up in the second half, dominating New Mexico as the game wore on and outscoring the Lobos 28-0 in the second half and holding Bob Davies’ team to under ten yards of offense in the third quarter.

The Longhorns would see most of their success through the ground, with David Ash taking another big step in his control of the offense and Case McCoy getting into the game for a touchdown pass of his own. Texas would add 147 yards rushing in the game on 30 attempts.

Box Score Hero: Ash once again showed hesitancy in getting the ball downfield, yet managed to put up a rather decent game by going 16-of-22 for 221 yards and two touchdown passes.

Rankings Ramifications: The No. 17 Longhorns didn’t receive much favor when playing a game that no one watched; UT may not get a boost if voters go by box score alone yet again despite the easy win.

But Did They Cover? Texas easily covered.
