Jarvis Jones isn’t worried about the poor numbers he put up at Georgia’s Pro Day last week. The outside linebacker was considered a surefire Top 10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft following the Bulldogs’ season, but many began questioning his stock after he missed the NFL Combine due to a scare with spinal stenosis and ran a 4.92 in the 40-yard dash on Thursday. Jones told the Red and Black that his tape should speak for itself.

Even after a poor showing at Georgia pro day last week, Jarvis Jones maintains that he should be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

“I’m a football player. If they pick me for not being a football player the draft ain’t what it is because it’s about football right. I’m a football player that’s what I do,” Jones said. “At the end of the day you get those drills, I’m not saying they’re not worth nothing, but you get those the drills, run the 40 and all that stuff, you could get somebody off the street that could run a 4.3 but they can’t play football.”
Jones also posted a 30.5-inch vertical leap and a 9’3” broad jump that would have ranked near the bottom among linebackers in Indianapolis. However, Jones’ numbers against SEC competition last season are just as eye-popping in the other direction. He led the the nation last season with 14.5 sacks, 24.5 tackles for loss and seven forced fumbles.
Jones apparently still has the attention of some of the neediest teams in the draft. The Philadelphia Eagles, Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs all own Top-5 picks this year, and all three teams have already scheduled meetings with the outside linebacker. For his part, Jones still maintains that he should be the No. 1 overall pick in April.
“I had a goal to be No. 1 pick. I’m a competitor all day. I love this game, I’m going to continue to train like I’m the best, have the confidence like I’m the best,” Jones said. “I’m not arrogant at all, I just feel like I’m a productive player. I’ve proved it the past two years and I just got to keep continuing to get better, always improving on something. At the end of the day I think I’m the No. 1 player, that’s my opinion, that’s how I feel, and at the end of the day some team will get a great player.”
