Ohio State pro day results: Tight end Jake Stoneburner among top performers

Tight end Jake Stoneburner was among the standouts at Ohio State Pro Day on Friday, reportedly running a 4.52 in the 40-yard dash. Also, Troy Smith made an appearance.

The big names were out again for Ohio State's pro day on Friday. Scouts from 29 NFL teams were on hand to watch testing by 14 participants, including appearances by the Buckeyes' seven NFL Combine invitees. All performed relatively well, but the talk of the event may have been tight end Jake Stoneburner.

Stoneburner improved on his already fast 40-yard dash in Indianapolis, clocking in unofficially at 4.55 and 4.52 seconds in Columbus. At 6’3, 252 pounds, Stoneburner’s frame doesn’t fit the prototypical frame of a wide receiver or a tight end at the next level particularly well. That may not matter given how well he can run, however.

(Interestingly, throwing passes was NFL journeyman and former Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith, who had high praise for Stoneburner. As for his own career, Smith admitted that his best days are behind him. He proved he still had plenty of arm strength Friday, however.)

Right tackle Reid Fragel also reportedly performed well. Though he did not run the 40, he did not shy away from showing off his physique during drills. Just as impressive, he reportedly put up 37 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press, improving on the 33 reps he put up at the combine.

Defensive end John Simon reportedly put up 40 reps in the bench press. He did not work out in front of scouts Friday, however. His Pro Day will take place on March 25.

Potential first-round defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins did show up at Pro Day, but only to take part in position drills. He decided to let his numbers from the combine stand as they are. Fragel and linebacker Etienne Sabino also did not the run the 40-yard dash.

Another player doing everything he can to get to the next level is fullback/linebacker/potential long snapper Zach Boren, who reportedly ran a 4.8 in the 40-yard dash. He also did a nice job on the bench, putting up 30 reps.

Defensive backs Travis Howard and Orhian Johnson will be vying for Day 3 selections in the 2013 NFL Draft. Both ran a 4.5 in the 40, according to reports.
