2013 NFL mock draft: Johnthan Banks to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Will the Bucs draft two cornerbacks if a Darrelle Revis trade isn’t finalized?

Consider this 2013 NFL mock draft scenario presented by Bucs Nation on behalf of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers a "what will happen if the Darrelle Revis trade falls through?" scenario.

Team Player Position Height Weight Class
43. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Johnthan Banks, Mississippi State CB 6'2" 185 SR

Sander Philipse: "Another cornerback after selecting Xavier Rhodes in the first round? Absolutely. The Buccaneers are that desperate for help in the secondary, and as long as they don't finalize a trade for Darrelle Revis they need at least two cornerbacks in the draft.

"This wouldn't be the first time the Buccaneers have doubled up at a position of need early in the draft. They did so at defensive tackle and wide receiver in 2010, while drafting two defensive ends in the first two rounds of the 2011 draft. Volume in the draft is part of the team's strategy when it comes to filling needs.

"Banks was at one point seen as the second-best cornerback in the draft, and while he's not valued as highly now he still represents good value at this point in the draft. He's tall, physically gifted and very physical. The Bucs would love to have him on the team, and him falling to their second round pick would be ideal."

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

Update: When I wrote my opinion on this choice, it slipped my mind that the Buccaneers signed Dashon Goldson to a five-year contract. Sorry to all the Bucs fans I greatly offended.

In regard to the pick itself, it’s good. Banks didn’t time well, so this is about the range he should be expected to come off the board. Doubling up on one position in a single draft is a savvy move. Doing it on two consecutive picks is risky. The depth at cornerback is good enough to where a starter can be found in the third round. There might not be the same level of talent at tight end.

At 3PM ET, the Carolina Panthers and Cat Scratch Reader will make their second-round pick.
