2013 NFL mock draft: Terron Armstead to San Diego Chargers

Could the Chargers pass on a top LT in Round 1 for a developmental one in Round 2?

Most 2013 NFL Draft projections indicate that the San Diego Chargers will target a left tackle early this year; that did not happen in our mock draft projection, but our friends at Bolts from the Blue are here to address the need in the second round.

Team Player Position Height Weight Class
45. San Diego Chargers Terron Armstead, Arkansas Pine-Bluff OT 6'5" 306 SR

John Gennaro: "Since making my first round selection, the Chargers have released starting left tackle Jared Gaither. They’ll need to find a stud to fill his shoes and protect Philip Rivers’ blind-side, and that could certainly be Armstead.

"Terron impressed at the Senior Bowl and the NFL Combine (running the fastest 40 for an offensive lineman in the history of the Combine) and has been flying up draft boards since. He has the potential to be a top-flight tackle in the league, but could be a year away from being ready to start. The signing of King Dunlap could give the Chargers an adequate stop-gap and someone to compete with Armstead in 2013.

"Everything I’ve seen or read on Armstead is glowing. He’s an incredible athlete and has been a dominating tackle for at least the last three years. He could’ve gone to a better football school/conference, but only Arkansas-Pine Bluff would allow him to also compete in shot put, in which he is a two-time state champion. He could use a little more bulk on his upper-body, but there’s no good reason why he couldn’t develop into a top-flight left tackle.

"If the Chargers wait until the second round to try and find an offensive tackle, they’d be lucky to find Armstead available with the No. 45 pick."

Here’s our own Dan Kadar to break down the pick:

If the Chargers miss out on an offensive tackle in the first round – a distinct possibility – then they may have to fall back on the best one available in the second round. Before the offseason process, Armstead was probably a fourth-round pick. But now, this is about the proper value for him. Armstead’s versatility is a plus. He can hold up on a power scheme if the Chargers keep the blocking style they’ve had in the past. But if they switch to a zone system under Joe D’Alessandris, Armstead is agile and athletic enough to move around.

That's a wrap on the Chargers this year; next up: the St. Louis Rams and Turf Show Times will be making their third pick of the mock at No. 46 overall.
