2013 NFL mock draft: Markus Wheaton to New England Patriots

New England is doubling up on wide receivers in our bloggers mock draft.

The New England Patriots have undergone yet another transition at the wide receiver position this off-season, and Pats Pulpit has now spent its first two picks in our 2013 NFL mock draft trying to re-build the position after losing Wes Welker to Denver.

Team Player Position Height Weight Class
59. New England Patriots Markus Wheaton, Oregon State WR 5'11" 189 SR

Dan Kadar: Doubling up on wide receivers may seem like a questionable move for the Patriots. But given Bill Belichick's drafting history, it should be completely out of the question. Last year he took two safeties. In 2011, it was two running backs. The year before was when they took tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. From a strategy standpoint, this is conceivable. Wheaton is a solid wide out, and probably a safer choice than first-round pick Keenan Allen. Considering the injuries with Gronkowski and Hernandez, a tight end like Gavin Escobar makes sense as well. As does one of the cornerbacks still on the board.

Tomorrow is the final day of the 2013 SB Nation NFL writers mock draft, with the Atlanta Falcons, San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens rounding out our month-long session of mock draft picks. See you at 9AM ET!
