2013 NFL Draft all-overrated team: Offensive guards Alvin Bailey, David Quessenberry overvalued

Between now and April 25, we will be unveiling our All-Underrated and All-Overrated teams for the 2013 NFL Draft. Each team will be revealed position by position with a first-team selection, second-team selection and honorable mentions as we see fit. We continue with the all-overrated offensive guards.

Just about every 2013 NFL mock draft has at least two guards taken in the first round. In fact, most probably have two in the top-20 picks. Alabama’s Chance Warmack and North Carolina’s Jonathan Cooper are the consensus top two guards for a reason. Both are quality prospects who fit different systems but are equally talented.

Finding guards beyond Warmack and Cooper will be tough. Many players will be attempting to make position changes or relying on potential.

Here are a few guards that are being overvalued in the pre-draft process.

First team: Alvin Bailey, Arkansas

Leaving Arkansas after his junior season was a questionable move for Alvin Bailey. He didn’t look the part this season, showing some athleticism but not looking all that coordinated in space. He’s a flawed prospect at this point in his development and could have used another season. Some consider Bailey a mid-round option, but he looks like a late-rounder.

Second-team: David Quessenberry, San Jose State

To be fair, David Quessenberry is not a guard. However, many have projected him as a player that could make the move. Given his 6’5-inch, narrow frame, I don’t see him excelling in that role. He needs to show more drive in his lower half, and without it, he may struggle at guard. His best fit seems to be at right tackle, but he’ll need to get stronger to play there as well.
