2015 NFL mock draft: Cedric Ogbuehi to Buffalo Bills at No. 50

Even though they didn’t have a first-round pick, the Bills have still managed to find a starter with their first pick in the draft.

Finally, the Buffalo Bills are on the clock in our ongoing 2015 NFL mock draft. The Bills, of course, were without a first-round pick after trading up for wide receiver Sammy Watkins in last year’s draft. We don’t yet know whether that was a smart move. What we do know is that Buffalo will see a lot of talented players -- namely offensive linemen -- get picked before the Bills are up in the draft. Despite 10 offensive linemen getting picked already, Brian Galliford from Buffalo Rumblings (and this very mock draft) managed to find a starter-level lineman at No. 50.

50. Bills: Cedric Ogbuehi, OT, Texas A&M

Galliford: As the Bills’ first pick (No. 50 overall) neared, Dan Lavoie and I kept an open mind regarding which position to attack. Buffalo has a fair amount of talent and depth across the entirety of its roster; the Bills have needs, of course, but none that are so pressing that a second-round pick absolutely has to be spent there.

Quarterback (Brett Hundley), tight end (Clive Walford), tackle (Cedric Ogbuehi), guard (A.J. Cann), defensive line (Jordan Phillips, Henry Anderson) and cornerback (Byron Jones, Jalen Collins) were our biggest considerations for the pick. Walford, Cann and Phillips were all gone by the time pick No. 50 rolled around, and we decided to scrap lower-upside prospects like the second-tier guards and Anderson in favor of a better floor-ceiling combination.

Lavoie lobbied fairly hard for Hundley, but in the end, it was difficult to foresee the Bills sacrificing the ability to contribute with this pick, as they’re trying to win this year. The corners were very tempting, but Buffalo has pretty good defensive backfield depth right now. That left us with Ogbuehi, a high-upside pick who may not contribute in 2015, but who might walk into the starting lineup in 2016. Buffalo has question marks at right tackle, where prospects Seantrel Henderson and Cyrus Kouandjio reside (Ogbuehi is a better prospect than both), and left tackle Cordy Glenn will be a free agent next spring. There was too much upside with Ogbuehi, and too much of a need at tackle, to pass this up.

Dan Kadar, SBNation.com: In my most recent mock draft, the choice for Buffalo was Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty, and that’s only because Hundley was gone. I prefer a quarterback for the Bills, but finding a starting offensive lineman is smart. Ogbuehi does have a high ceiling, but he also has some versatility. He played guard some at Texas A&M and could begin his NFL career on the inside.

  • 32. P.J. Williams, CB, Florida State
