The Philadelphia Eagles will host the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football this week and the NFL odds are saying Philly is the heavy favorite. If Houston has a shot at stopping the Eagles, it starts with stopping Michael Vick. He's been playing at a very high level this year and his arm combined with his legs makes the Eagles a major threat.
Thursday Night Football, Texas Vs. Eagles: Michael Vick Is Key To Stopping Philly
SB Nation’s Battle Red Blog and Bleeding Green Nation held a Q&A about the game tonight and our Eagles blogger gives us the key to stopping Philly.
Stop Michael Vick from taking over the game, don't let the Eagles WRs beat you deep, and throw lots of screens on offense. The name of the game with defending Vick is playing containment. You want to pressure him, but your defensive ends can't let him run right by them. There are going to be times when Vick wants to roll out or take off and run, and often the the best way to defend that is to just hold your ground and contain rather than rush and try to sack him.
The thing with Vick used to be, stop him from running the ball and make him pass. That’s the old way of defending Vick. Now? You gotta do both. He’s become a dangerous passer and you can no longer expect him to eventually make a mistake in the passing game.
In other words, there are no easy ways to stop Vick. The Texans pass defense could be in for a heck of a day. Check out Battle Red Blog and Bleeding Green Nation for more on the game.
