In the first quarter of Sunday’s Chargers-Bengals game, San Diego’s running back Mike Tolbert went down with a scary injury, taking a hit and fumbling the ball. Tolbert stayed on the field for several minutes before being carted off on a stretcher.
Ryan Tolbert Diagnosed With Sprained Neck, Bruised Shoulder
Fortunately, the injury has been diagnosed as only a sprained neck and bruised shoulder, a bit of good news for the Chargers and their fans on an otherwise disappointing Sunday that saw their playoff hopes come to an end with the loss in Cincinnati.
“I wanted to (get up), but they were being cautious,” Tolbert said after the game, his left arm in a sling, “Whenever you get in the head and the neck area, the shoulders, stuff like that, it’s better to be safe than sorry.”
“I was just trying to finish off the run, kind of got contorted up in there a little,” Tolbert said. “I felt the pain and the trainers and the doctors were being cautious.”
Tolbert was replaced by rookie Ryan Mathews, who finished with 55 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. But our Chargers blog, Bolts From The Blue, noted that “the running game looks lost without him.”
