The San Francisco 49ers may not be looking far for their next head coach. In fact, it could come from just across the bay. The 49ers requested permission to interview Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
49ers Request Permission To Interview Raiders’ Hue Jackson For Head Coaching Job
The news is surprising because the 49ers were expected to hire their GM before the head coach. It’s also possible this is an effort to comply with the Rooney Rule.
This brings up an interesting situation for the 49ers and Raides. Oakland wasn’t expected to pick up the option on Tom Cable’s contract, although they had several weeks to decide. Now the Raiders may be forced to pick Cable or Jackson more quickly if Jackson is in demand.
Jackson is given a lot of credit for the offensive surge we saw this year from the normally hapless Raiders. The 49ers want to get their offense in order to Jackson’s name being in the mix makes sense.
