On Tuesday reports emerged that the Cincinnati Bengals would likely be retaining head coach Marvin Lewis heading into the 2011 season. Because Lewis’ contract had run out at the end of the season, there was speculation he wouldn’t be back. But ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the two sides were working on a deal and they were optimistic he would return in 2011.
Marvin Lewis, Bengals Haven’t Worked Out A Deal; Future In ‘Serious Jeopardy’
That’s not the case anymore.
Schefter now reports Lewis left the Bengals complex after “the two sides could not agree on [the] franchise’s direction” and his future is now in “serious jeopardy”.
Lewis reportedly wanted upgrades to the team facilities and some sort of changes in the personnel department to agree to return. Bengals owner Mike Brown also operates as the team’s GM.
It’s unclear where things will go for now. If the Bengals don’t bring him back, they’re probably already behind the eight ball on hiring a new coach so this is a situation that could (or should) be moving quickly one way or the other.
