Report: Hue Jackson Promoted To Head Coach Of Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders reportedly stayed within the organization to find a replacement for head coach Tom Cable. Shortly after word leaked that Cable wouldn’t have the option on his contract picked up, the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting offensive coordinator Hue Jackson will be promoted to head coach. Jackson has seen interest in his services pick up recently, with the San Francisco 49ers asking for, and receiving, permission to speak to him about their vacant head coaching position.

Silver and Black, the San Francisco Chronicle’s Raiders blog, had the details of Cable’s departure and the hiring of Jackson.

Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson will take over as the new head coach, a source close to Jackson said.

Oakland had until Dec. 17 to decide whether to pick up a two-year option in Cable’s contract. Cable, who started with the Raiders as an offensive line coach, finishes up 17-27 as head coach since taking over from Lane Kiffin on an interim basis in 2008.

Oakland would be the first head coaching job for Jackson, who’s spent time with a variety of teams in various assistant coaching capacities. Before joining the Raiders, Jackson was the quarterbacks coach for the Baltimore Ravens after spending a brief, one-year stint as offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons.

The Raiders finished the year at 8-8, their best record since 2002. Oakland appeared to be moving in the right direction under Cable’s leadership, giving Jackson a head-start as he takes over the job.
