Tom Cable Fired: Not All Raiders Players Happy With The Move

The Oakland Raiders on Tuesday night announced head coach Tom Cable has been fired. The move doesn’t come as a total surprise since multiple reports emerged this week that Cable wouldn’t be returning to the team. The Raiders had until January 18 to decide if they would pick up the two-year option on Cable’s contract. Apparently they won’t do that.

Though the move may not be a total surprise, it’s not sitting well with all the players. Punter Shane Lechler described the move as a “huge setback” suggesting free agents such as Michael Bush and/or Robert Gallery will now not want to return.

Hue Jackson has reportedly been tabbed the next head coach and, as Pro Football Talk points out, he will be the seventh head coach in Lechler’s tenure with the team (dating back to 2000): Jon Gruden, Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin, and Cable.

The Raiders had gone an NFL record seven consecutive seasons with at least 11 losses so, as Lechler argues, how do you justify removing a coach who just went 8-8 on the year and 6-0 in the division? Of course, Lechler is asking to make sense of Al Davis, who apparently won’t return his calls, and that’s a nearly impossible task.

Check out Silver and Black Pride to see what Raiders fans are saying about the move.
