Wade Phillips Coming To Texans As Defensive Coordinator, According To Report

The Houston Texans coaching staff has been in the news this week. Defensive coordinator Frank Bush was fired this week and Gary Kubiak was told he would be retained in 2011. The thinking is that the Texans offense, which Kubiak has a hand in, isn’t the problem so they’ll keep him and hope to fix the defensive side of the ball.

Enter Wade Phillips. The former Cowboys head coach has been rumored as a candidate to take over the defense in Houston and ABC 13 reports the Texans will indeed hire him as defensive coordinator.

Phillips’ dad, Bum, also coached in Houston and Phillips started his career under his father in Houston. He also went to the University of Houston so it sounds like this “homecoming” played a role.

Phillips is now tasked with fixing one of the worst defenses in the league. The Texans defense was ranked 29th overall and dead last against the pass, where the bulk of the struggles came.
