Baltimore still can’t seem to move the ball on the ground. But Joe Flacco and the Ravens’ passing game are picking up the slack.
NFL Playoffs, Ravens Vs. Chiefs: Ray Rice Gets Touchdown Catch Before Halftime
The Ravens got a touchdown through the air on their final drive of the first half, after Flacco found Ray Rice wide open and hit him for a nine-yard touchdown pass. It’s the first ever touchdown catch for a Baltimore running back in a playoff game, and just the second touchdown pass in a playoff game for Flacco.
It’s also the culmination of a incremental, clock-killing Ravens passing attack that has dominated the first half. The Ravens held the ball for over 20 minutes in the first two quarters, and ran 42 plays to the Chiefs’ 17 in the first half. Flacco has yet to complete a pass of over 30 yards, but the Ravens have been dynamite on third downs, converting on six of their nine attempts.
The flip side of that is the Baltimore defense’s new susceptibility to the big play. Jamaal Charles is averaging 12.4 yards per carry, and the Chiefs are collectively gaining 8 yards per rush.
