Matt Schaub Injury: Season-Ending Surgery May Be Needed

Texans quarterback Matt Schaub is still hopeful that he can return this season but admits that he may need surgery that would "probably" end his season. Head coach Gary Kubiak said that a decision regarding surgery will be made within a week. In the meantime, Schaub continue to visit doctors and deal with the pain.

“When you look at it, it’s pretty colorful and everything,” Schaub said, according to the Associated Press. “It’s pretty sore and beat up right now. But we’re going to search out some other opinions and just do as much as we can to get it right here in the near future to see what can happen.”

In addition to bruising, Schaub said his foot is quite swollen. “I’m not one to give in to something like this that easily,” he said. “It doesn’t look good. My foot is pretty much the size of a cinder block right now.”

Regardless of Schaub’s long-term future, Matt Leinert will take the reins of the offense against the Jaguars on Nov. 27 following this week’s bye. Schaub said he’s confident in his teammate.

“This isn’t his first rodeo,” Schaub said. “He’s played some football in this league. He knows how to play the quarterback position.”

Leinert, the 10th overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2006, has started 17 games in his career, including just one in the last four seasons.
