Former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer made it official Wednesday afternoon announcing he was getting back into coaching with the UFL’s Virginia Destroyers. He made the announcement in his very first tweet:
Marty Schottenheimer Confirms: He’s Headed To UFL’s Virginia Destroyers
I have returned to Coaching with the Virginia Destroyers and the UFL.
A report came out earlier this week indicating Schottenheimer was close to making the leap to the UFL.
It’ll be interesting to find out why Schottenheimer made this move.
The NFL lockout could be part of the reason. We’re not sure when the league will get started up again but if the lockout goes into late summer, or even into the season, Schottenheimer wouldn’t have an opportunity to join a team considering coaches and players can’t have contact with each other until the lockout is over.
I also wonder if it was because there’s not a spot for him in the NFL. If that’s the case, I’d be surprised. Perhaps he only wanted a head coaching job and didn’t want to go back to being a coordinator and, right now, there are no open head coaching jobs.
Schottenheimer has never won a Super Bowl as a head coach so we’ll see if he can get that ring in the UFL.
