Plaxico Burress Rumors Could Point To Jets Or Rams

Former New York Giants WR Plaxico Burress is set to be released on June 6 after nearly two years in prison. Once he gets out, the question will be whether he returns to the NFL. Agent Drew Rosenhaus said as recently as last March that at least a couple of teams have stayed in contact during his prison sentence.

So will Burress ever play in the NFL again? And who are the teams interested in him?

ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested recently that two teams that make sense are the St. Louis Rams or New York Jets. He wasn’t exactly reporting those teams are interested instead suggesting that they simply make sense for him once he is out of prison.

On the Rams, they could use another receiver to pair with QB Sam Bradford in the coming years, so I understand why they might be interested. The connection is head coach Steve Spagnuolo’s time with Burress and the Giants. On the Jets, the future of WRs Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes are uncertain so they could be in the market for a receiver as well.

Of course it all comes down to whether Burress still has the physical tools to still be effective. He’ll be 34 years old in August, which is considered old for a receiver and especially old for one that hasn’t been on the field in two years.

First, Burress needs to be released in June. Second, the NFL lockout needs to end so someone can sign him. Only them will we begin to understand the true prospects of Burress making a return to the NFL.
