NFLPA Rookie Symposium Gets More Than 150 Players

Because of the NFL lockout, the annual rookie symposium, which helps rookies transition to the fame and wealth of being an NFL player, was canceled. It was believed to be the first NFL event canceled due to the NFL lockout.

That is until the NFLPA decided to step forward and host the symposium themselves. So the NFLPA is hosting rookies in Florida teaching them the ins and outs of being a young, rich and famous athlete. Folks like Joe Gibbs have come in and talked to them about the importance of financial education and the rookies have also been encouraged not to blow all their money in year one.

Some of them will listen; at least the ones that showed up. Via Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com:

Do you know how many of the 254 invited draftees are coming? According to a person with knowledge of the situation, about 150 or just more than half. Almost 100 rookies are blowing off the event.

This is usually a required event where there would be near 100 percent participation. But, with the NFL lockout, it’s no longer required and the NFLPA, who has the players’ best interests at heart, can’t make all these players come.

It would, however, be beneficial if each of them did come. Freeman notes that every year some head coach will learn that a particular player is in financial trouble despite all the warnings along the way.
