The Seattle Seahawks let QB Matt Hasselbeck walk, leading them to announce new free agent sigining Tarvaris Jackson as the team’s starter for the upcoming season.
Tarvaris Jackson Named Seahawks Starter; Contract Terms Released
Pete Carroll announced Jackson would be the No. 1 quarterback on the Seahawks, according to a Tweet on Saturday afternoon from ESPN’s John Clayton. Clayton also reports that Jackson’s contract with Seattle is worth $8 million over the course of the next two seasons.
Whitehurst will compete for starting job once he gets up to speed on the offense, according to Danny O’Neill of the Seattle Times, but Jackson will at least be the team’s opening day starter.

Teams and players can negotiate contracts but can’t actually sign them until 6:00 p.m. (ET) on Friday but Jackson is on his way to Seattle tonight.
The move makes sense based on Jackson’s experience with his former offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell, but Jackson remains an unknown after the Vikings made him a second round pick in the 2006 draft. He’s started 20 games in his career winning exactly half of them which is slightly below his career passing percentage.
