Plaxico Burress, Tom Coughlin To Meet Wednesday About Potential Deal

NJ.com reports that former star wide receiver Plaxico Burress will meet with former coach Tom Coughlin later this week so that the Giants can decide whether they might want to re-sign him.

“I really don’t know what I’m going to say,” Burress said. “I’m just going to go in there tomorrow and speak from the heart, be truthful with him and let him know how I feel. Whatever comes out is going to come out.

“I’m pretty sure there are things he wants to say, too.”

It’s pretty surprising that the Giants would bother as Burress will turn 34 before the season starts. He’s now past the age where he’s likely to be an impact player as a receiver, and that’s before considering that he spent the better part of the last two years in a cell. Then there’s the fact that Burress was bad-mouthing Coughlin in the press just a couple weeks ago. Given that Burress didn’t exactly have a reputation for being a team player the first time he was with the Giants, it’s hard to understand why Coughlin would want him back.

Ed Valentine at Big Blue View raises the possibility that this could all be public relations on the Giants’ parts, wanting to seem open-minded to the possible return of a star player, when in actuality they don’t want him at all. That sounds like a conspiracy theory, but in this case, I think it actually makes some sense.
