Matt Leinart has signed with the Houston Texans, a day after ESPN reports suggested that he was signing with the Seattle Seahawks. The signing was apparently a bit of a trickle-down effect, created when the Seahawks agreed to terms with Tarvaris Jackson.
Matt Leinart Signs With Texans, After Reportedly Signing With Seahawks
In a series of Tweets, Houston Chronicle reporter John McClain explained the situation like this:
Texans have agreed to contract with QB Matt Leinart. Coach Gary Kubiak wanted Matt Leinart back. Leinart told Kubiak he wanted to sign with a team that would give him a chance to start. When Seattle agreed with tavaris jackson, that cleared the door for Leinart to return to texans.
It's hard to imagine Leinart will have a realistic shot at starting in Houston, though. Matt Schaub put up some of the best numbers in the NFL last year, tossing 24 touchdowns to just 12 interceptions, throwing for 4,370 yards and posting a rating of 92.0. That was actually a relatively down year for him, as he has posted even better QB ratings each of the previous two seasons.
Leinart, meanwhile, has never come close to living up to the hype that made him the No. 10 overall pick in the 2006 Draft. In the last four seasons, he’s made just six starts. In his career, he has thrown just 14 touchdowns while tossing 20 interceptions.
