Seen above looking like a confused hostage, you may recognize Vinny Cerrato as the mastermind behind the Washington Redskins' offseason strategy from 2002-2009. And yes, in case you were wondering, Vinny would absolutely sign Albert Haynesworth again.
Vinny Cerrato Should Really Write A Book About The Redskins
“Under the circumstances, it made sense,” he says.
Yes, at the time, the Titanic made sense, too. But putting that aside for a second—have you heard about the time he and the Skins tried to pull off a blockbuster for Chad Ochocinco?
DC Sports Bog enlightens us, with quotes from Cerrato:
“I was part of trying to trade for Chad Ochocinco, and when [Cincinnati] said no, they meant no. And Marvin [Lewis] would have done it. Two No. 1s, that’s exactly what it was. ... Drew [Rosenhaus] was pushing it hard, Chad was pushing it hard, and you know what, I think it worked out best for the Redskins that it didn’t happen at the time.”
It’s really a shame that the trade never came to fruition, because that absolutely would have been the most Redskins move of all time—aging (check) big-name (check) overrated (check) skill player (check), in exchange for a prized first round draft pick (check, x 2). It feels like generation of NFL fans have been robbed of the defining idiotic trade of our time.
As for Cerrato, what other trades did he unsuccessfully try? (You cannot convince me he didn’t at least ask about getting Daunte Culpepper from the Raiders.) We need to know, and Vinny needs to tell us in a memoir. Listening to him look back on all this insanity is even more entertaining than the insanity itself. “You know what, I think it worked out best for the Redskins that it didn’t happen at the time.”
Sure, he could probably provide some juicy anecdotes about Dan Snyder, too, but that’s not even the point. We just need 350 pages of Vinny Cerrato recounting various personnel decisions and explaining his rationale. Nothing more, nothing less than 350 pages of blissful insanity.
It’d be like MC Hammer’s guide to money management, only better, because Vinny has somehow come through all this without an ounce of self-awareness. So... Get this man a book deal!
