Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay caused a stir last weekend on Twitter when he said he was in Hattiesburg, MS suggesting that the Colts were talking to QB Brett Favre. That, of course, ended up being false but the Colts did indeed sign a retired quarterback.
Colts Confirm Kerry Collins Will Start If Peyton Manning Can’t
QB Kerry Collins joined the team on a one-year deal that will pay him $4 million. The salary is significant because it strongly suggests that, if QB Peyton Manning's injury prevents him from starting Week 1, Collins will get the nod.
An even stronger suggestion (actually, a confirmation) of Collins possibly starting was made when Colts exec Bill Polian confirmed that Collins would be the starter -- and not QB Curtis Painter -- if Manning can't go. Via Indy Star:
“All he has to do is get physically ready,” Polian said. “There’s no offense he can’t master in 48 hours from a conceptual standpoint.”
So it’ll be Collins in Week 1 if Manning can’t go.
However, if I were a betting man, I wouldn’t be placing any money against Manning starting. I simply won’t believe someone else will start until the Colts line up for their first snap of the season and someone other than Manning, and his 10-plus consecutive years of starting, is back there.
SB Nation’s Stampede Blue believes that Collins’ signing means he very well could start Week 1. Check out their lengthy write-up on what the Collins signing means. Over 80 percent of Stampede Blue readers think it’s a good move for the team.
