Of the many Indianapolis faithful who are happy to see veteran Kerry Collins on the roster as they wonder whether or not Peyton Manning will be ready, there's one who doesn't seem all that excited.
Reggie Wayne Says Kerry Collins ‘A Step Back’ From Peyton Manning
Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne, to be exact.
"We don’t even know him, we ain’t vanilla, man, we ain’t no simple offense...So for him to can come in here and be the starter, I don’t see it. I think that’s a step back.
"Who says Kerry’s going to be the starter?...Just because we bring him in doesn’t mean he’s the starter. He’s got to learn too, right? Unless they gave him a playbook months ago, he’s got to learn to.
"I don’t care who you are, I mean I’m not going to let anyone just come in here and just push someone [like Curtis Painter] aside like you’re that dog now, you know what I mean?"
As you might have noticed, Wayne is an unabashed Curtis Painter supporter. However, given Painter’s preseason stats (1 TD, 5 INTs), he’s likely in the minority on this one.
Colts blog Stampede Blue disagrees with Wayne’s assessment.
I like and respect Reggie Wayne, and if he personally likes Curtis, that’s fine. But, his suggestion that Curtis has taken some unjustified lumps in his two years as the back-up is simply laughable. When the QB has a rating is 9.8, there is naturally going to be criticism. If Reggie somehow thinks the criticism of Painter has been unfair or unwarranted, he’s living in a fantasy world.
