Ed Sabol may not be the best known individual to receive induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011, but football fans undoubtedly have been exposed to his work. Sabol is the founder of NFL Films, which is behind all those yearly team yearbook productions that are filled with the dramatic music of Sam Spence.
Ed Sabol, Founder Of NFL Films, Enters NFL Hall Of Fame
Ed Sabol, NFL Films founder, enters the hallowed halls of Canton at 94-years-old.
Sabol had a background in theater and sold overcoats before he sold the NFL on his ability to film the 1962 NFL Championship Game. Two years later, Sabol successfully pitched to Commissioner Pete Rozelle the idea for a league film production company, thus creating NFL Films.
Sabol worked hand-in-hand with his son Steve in this venture, though the younger Sabol was a cameraman at the start of his career. Steve succeeded his father as president of NFL Films in 1984, but Ed stayed on for another 11 years as chairman of the company.
Ed, 94, will be presented by Steve, who is fighting a brain tumor. The father-son pairing certainly has an NFL Films-worthy story.
