The Washington Redskins' quarterback competition is reportedly over. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora tweets that Rex Grossman has been named the Redskins' Week 1 starting quarterback, winning the job after competing for it in the preseason against John Beck.
Rex Grossman Named Redskins Starting QB Over John Beck
Rex Grossman has won the Redskins’ starting quarterback job over John Beck.
Grossman entered the 2011 preseason as the Redskins' incumbent starter, having supplanted Donovan McNabb as Mike Shanahan's field general of choice by the end of the 2010 season. Beck was acquired in the 2010 preseason, but threw no passes for the Redskins during the 2010 regular season.
Grossman, an eight-year NFL veteran, took the lion’s share of Redskins’ snaps at quarterback in the 2011 preseason, leading SB Nation DC’s Mike Prada to wonder whether the Redskins were able to properly evaluate Beck based on preseason play. Grossman’s official positioning as Washington’s starter comes days after it seemed as if signs were pointing to Beck earning the job.
