Lions vs. Eagles, Week 6: Philadelphia defense to blame for collapse

The Philadelphia Eagles blew a 10-point lead late in the fourth quarter of their Week 6 matchup against the Detroit Lions, eventually losing 26-23 in overtime.

There are certainly plenty to blame for the collapse, but Jason B. at SB Nation’s Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation directed much of his ire toward the defense:

For the second straight week, the defense failed to hold a 4th quarter lead and the Eagles lost 26-23 to the Lions at Lincoln Financial Field.

Unlike last week, this was one wasn’t a case of the defense playing well overall but giving up one drive. This was a complete and total defensive collapse as they allowed 17 points in the 4th quarter and barely served as a road bump to the Lions offense.

The Eagles had actually shut down Matthew Stafford and the rest of the Lions offense in the first half, holding Stafford to 96 yards on 6-of-18 passing. But the second half proved to be a whole other story, as Stafford found a groove and picked the Eagles apart.

Jason also criticized Eagles quarterback Michael Vick for his poor performance in the overtime period, when Vick held on to the ball too long and took two bad sacks. But Jason could not help but go back to the Eagles' defense to blame them for acting like a sieve on the Lions' game-winning drive.

The Eagles now sit at 3-3 heading into their bye week.
