Lions vs. Eagles, Week 6: Lions fans see victory as a ‘spark’

The Detroit Lions’ win over the Philadelphia Eagles may have been just what the team needed to get its season back on track.

The Detroit Lions pulled off a stunning comeback victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, improving their record to 2-3 on the season. Detroit still finds itself in last place in the NFC North, but a loss in Week 6 may have made it nearly impossible for the team to make the playoffs. Instead, the Lions are right back in the thick of things in the NFC.

Sean Yuille of Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Lions blog, wrote after the game on Sunday that, first and foremost, the team needs to play better in all four quarters of the game. Both of Detroit's wins this season -- with the other being a Week 1 victory over the St. Louis Rams -- have come on late-game comebacks after a lackluster three-plus quarters. Yuille states that Detroit can't keep relying on its ability to comeback from deficits late in games.

But he also believes that Sunday’s victory may have altered the course of Detroit’s 2012 season.

The Lions are still only 2-3 and have a long way to go as a football team, but this is the kind of win that could be the spark they needed to get the season turned around. A 1-4 start would have essentially ended their season in the second week of October. By winning, the Lions take a lot of momentum into next week’s Monday Night Football showdown with the Chicago Bears.

Yuille believes that with Sunday’s victory, the focus of the season turned away from considering whether current coaches or players were right for the franchise and toward the possibility of the Lions making a second straight playoff appearance.
