Ray Lewis injury: Ravens LB placed on IR, designated for return

Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis was placed on short-term IR, allowing for the small possibility of his return this season.

The Ravens put Ray Lewis on Injured Reserve (designated to return) on Tuesday, creating a slight possibility that the franchise linebacker could suit up again this season. Lewis suffered a complete tear of the triceps last week in the Ravens win over the Cowboys, presumably ending his season in mid-October. But the Ravens are holding out hope, however faint, that he could possibly recover in time to re-join the club in some capacity as the season (and potential postseason) progresses.

According to Aaron Wilson, Ravens coach John Harbaugh said the return was unlikely, but that the team felt like they should “keep the door open.” The short-term IR is a roster designation created under the new CBA, allowing a player to return to practice after six weeks on the shelf and play in games after eight weeks. It’s highly unlikely that Lewis makes it back, but by not putting him on season-ending IR, the Ravens are not foreclosing the possibility.

Lewis was slated to have surgery on the torn triceps on Wednesday.
