The Chargers would like you to ‘take a chill pill’

The San Diego Chargers have a message for upset fans.

Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

Hey man, the Chargers want you to know that the Chargers are struggling. They can see the record too. Sure, they lost a stinker on Monday night, getting their names etched into the ugly side of the record book. San Diego’s public relations department knows you’re hurting, Bolts fans. But they have just one bit advice ...

Take a chill pill.

Nope, those quotes are not a mistake. That was the title of this blog post from Bill Johnston, the team’s public relations director. Doubtlessly, the concept of “blogging” sounded cool to this Johnston fellow, a way to reach young people, appeal to members of the silent majority and all other square icons.

This part will insult your intelligence the least:

Your team is 3-3, tied at the top of the division, and has 10 games to play. If the Chargers are your team, get behind them and stay behind them. We’re all at our best when we know others believe in us.

Here’s how the director of public relations starts out his message to you so-called fans:

What’s with you people?

Here’s my favorite part, where he asks you to spare the poor blokes who blew a 24-point lead.

If you want these players and coaches to succeed, then support them. Don’t tear them down. What you want and what we all want, including your team, is to know people believe in them.

I’m sorry, part of the bargain with salaries in professional sports is that fans get to boo teams and publicly criticize coaches and second-guess general managers, with certain, obvious limits.
