Philadelphia Eagles at Pittsburgh Steelers: betting odds, preview, trends, pick

The battle of Pennsylvania sees a clash of streak on Sunday but the total may be the most obvious betting trend in Week 5.

The Philadelphia Eagles hope to hold on to their spot atop the NFC East with a tough road win this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field.

Bettors get them as 3-point road underdogs, but many are focused on the OVER 43 wager because of an intriguing Pittsburgh trend.

”In their past 10 games as a favorite of 4 or less, the Steelers have played OVER the total every time,” said Jack Randall, football analyst at OddsShark.com, the lines provider to SBNation.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have not looked sharp through the first three games of the season, going just 1-2 SU and ATS and looking very vulnerable on defense in losses to the Oakland Raiders and Denver Broncos.

That all could change this week though as key defensive cogs James Harrison and Troy Polamalu are set to return from injuries. Rashard Mendenhall is also expected to return, which should help the running game in a big way.

The Philadelphia Eagles just keep finding a way to win football games. With a 19-17 win over New York last Sunday night, the Eagles moved to 3-1 SU and 1-3 ATS on the young season.

All three of Philadelphia’s wins have been by two points or less, and all three saw the Eagles trailing with under two minutes to go before scoring late to take the lead. Will we see similar late-game heroics this week?

Pittsburgh has been a dominant home team in recent years with an 11-1 SU and 9-3 ATS record over its last 12 home games. The one game that Pittsburgh looked sharp in, a 27-10 win over the New York Jets, came at home this season.

Off to a 1-2 SU start, the Steelers have already fallen behind the Cincinnati Bengals and the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC North as both are off to 3-1 starts. Considering that this one is at home, the Steelers are more desperate for a win, a handful of key players are returning and the Steelers have had a bye week off to prepare for Mike Vick and the Eagles, all signs seem to point to a Pittsburgh win here.

Giving 3.5 points to this Eagles team is scary, but if Pittsburgh puts it all together this week, the Steelers should be able to cover the spread.
