Lions vs. Vikings 2012: ‘Forget the playoffs’ for Detroit after Sunday’s loss

The Detroit Lions’ playoff hopes took a huge hit Sunday as they fell to their division-rival Minnesota Vikings.

The Detroit Lions got down early Sunday and couldn't come back, as they fell to the Minnesota Vikings, 34-24.

The Lions entered Sunday's contest after winning three of four games, regaining a .500 record after a 1-3 start and instilling optimism in the Detroit fanbase. But on Sunday, they got down to Minnesota early, could not contain running back Adrian Peterson late and all hope was deflated.

Sean Yuille of SB Nation’s Detroit Lions blog, Pride of Detroit, writes that after a game as disapointing as Sunday’s, any chance at a playoff berth for the Lions is essentially dead.

The unfortunate reality of that optimism is the possibility that it could all be for naught should the Lions not win. We found out on Sunday just how harsh that reality is, as the Lions failed to deliver in Minnesota...Forget the playoffs, and forget about being optimistic about this team.

The loss completed Minnesota’s season sweep of the Lions and put Detroit firmly in last place in the NFC North. They now sit behind the third-place Vikings by one game, two games after taking into account that Minnesota owns the tiebreaker.

The Lions head home to face the red-hot Green Bay Packers in Week 11.
