Rams vs. 49ers, Week 10: Sloppy play leads to tie

Opportunities for victory were squandered by both San Francisco and St. Louis on Sunday.

The San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams played to a 24-24 tie on Sunday, which was the first time an NFL game ended in a tie since 2008. Both teams made some mistakes that cost them potential victories, and SB Nation's Niners Nation was not pleased with San Francisco's overall performance:

How about the defense getting shredded for 458 yards and 24 points by one of the worst offenses in the league. How about losing the time of possession battle and the third down efficiency battle to the Rams. How about sloppy play, senseless penalties, and David Akers missing the game-winning kick.

The 49ers also lost starting quarterback Alex Smith to a concussion in the first half -- Smith apparently suffered the injury on a one-yard keeper. Smith was replaced by Colin Kaepernick, who helped the team rally from a 17-7 deficit entering the fourth quarter.

In overtime, both teams missed a field goal. After San Francisco's David Akers missed a 41-yard attempt, the Rams made what would have been the game-winning kick, except that it was negated by a delay of game penalty. Kicker Greg Zuerlein's attempt after the penalty sailed wide right. The Rams also had an 80-yard pass play in overtime negated by penalty.
