Cedric Benson injury: Packers RB will not return this season

Packers RB Cedric Benson will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the season after he had surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury on Wednesday.

The Green Bay Packers will be without running back Cedric Benson for the remainder of the season, according to a tweet from the team's official feed. He had surgery on Wednesday to help repair a Lisfranc injury he suffered during the team's game against the Colts on Oct. 7th, ending any chance of a return during the 2012 season.

Benson was placed in injured reserve shortly afterward originally suffering the injury, but had the opportunity to come off IR if the injury healed in time. However, his injury did not heal as well as the team had hoped, and he had to be shut down for the season.

Benson is in his eighth NFL season out of Texas, and had compiled 248 yards and a touchdown through five games before getting hurt. The Packers are expected to use the running back by committee approach for the rest of the season, with James Starks, Alex Green, and John Kuhn all seeing carries.
