Rams and 49ers doing all they can to tie again

Despite some mistakes that might have given their team a chance to win, the 49ers keep letting the possibility of a tie exist.

Dilip Vishwanat

The Rams and 49ers might have a death wish that involves somehow playing 10 quarters against each other in a single regular season. With Colin Kaepernick trying to run the clock down while leading, 10-2, in St. Louis and deep in Rams territory, Ted Ginn Jr. mishandled a dump-off. Instead of falling on the ball, he tried to pick it up. If he had just recovered the fumble, it might not have kept the door open for a second consecutive tie between the two teams.

Instead, Janoris Jenkins picked up the ball at the 2-yard line and flipped his body into the end zone to make it a 10-8 game. St. Louis nearly blew their chance to tie the game (which is necessary for any game that ends in a tie) with a false start on the two-point conversion attempt, but Sam Bradford found Lance Kendricks for a catch-and-run into the end zone to make it 10-10.

However, Kaepernick made the mistake of breaking off a 50-yard run to bring the 49ers to within field-goal range. David Akers successfully converted a 33-yard field goal to make it 13-10 with under two minutes left, which really hurts their chances to tie again. Thank goodness that the 49ers know that a 13-10 score won’t help them tie the game.

Bradford drove the Rams down the field (with the help of a 15-yard penalty on San Fran) and Greg Zuerlein kicked a 53-yard field goal to send it to overtime. Only 15 minutes left until another tie!
