Chargers vs. Jets 2012: ‘McElroy is never going to be a franchise quarterback’

The New York Jets started Greg McElroy at quarterback on Sunday, but his performance wasn’t good enough to give the team a win over the San Diego Chargers in a 27-17 loss.

The New York Jets didn't win with Greg McElroy as their starting quarterback, with the second-year player out of Alabama getting sacked 11 times in a 27-17 loss to the San Diego Chargers.

McElroy didn’t look awful - he completed 14 of 24 passes for 185 yards - but he threw no touchdowns and a pick. But it wouldn’t be enough: the team had the opportunity to win after entering the half with a lead, but only managed three points in the second half as San Diego pulled away with the win. For Jets blog Gang Green Nation, the biggest problem was offensive line play, but McElroy’s performance wasn’t a good one. They wrote after the loss that the quarterback has a ceiling of being a second-stringer:

I feel comfortable in saying McElroy is never going to be a franchise quarterback in the NFL. I saw enough throws to know he just does not have the arm strength. Next to him, Chad Pennington looks like John Elway. His ball floats whenever he throws it more than ten yards. He cannot fit it into any kind of window. McElroy severely limits any playbook. There were things I liked from McElroy. He had two turnovers late, but those came when he was put in a position where he had to win the game. Early when things were going to plan, he protected the ball and made smart decisions. He showed he was tough and not afraid to run to pick up yardage. Can he eventually grow enough to become a decent backup?

They didn't have a huge problem with the idea that McElroy will start next week against the Buffalo Bills with the season over. The majority of action going on is in a stream proposing potential head coaches to replace Rex Ryan after the season's end.
