Rex Ryan, Tim Tebow address Jets’ Wildcat report

According to Jets head coach Rex Ryan, Tim Tebow’s lack of play time against the Chargers was a “coach’s decision.”

Tim Tebow was miffed at the fact that he got passed over for the starting quarterback job during New York's loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday, with Greg McElroy instead getting the nod. Tebow reportedly asked to be kept out of the Wildcat packages the team was running after being kept out of the starting position, and did not see a single play on Sunday.

According to head coach Rex Ryan, through a team spokesperson, it wasn't Tebow's decision. Instead, it was a "coach's decision" to use Jeremy Kerley in the Wildcat packages. "I also wanted to give Kerley a shot at running some Wildcat things," Ryan said. "We knew they wouldn't expect him to throw the ball, and that was the case."

“It just kind of happens,” Tebow said when asked about the Wildcat decision.

The decision to replace Tebow with Kerley in the Wildcat was apparently made early enough in the week to give the receiver time to work on the role in practice. Ryan announced that McElroy would start on Tuesday.

Tebow also responded to the rumors circulating this week about his future with the team.

“It’s been disappointing, obviously (the season) didn’t go as we thought, as I had hoped,” he said. “But sometimes in life you have that. Sometimes you have setbacks and you have to look at them as an opportunity to step back up and keep working and figure out what to do.”

He added that his focus was strictly on next week’s game.

Ryan and the Jets will finish their season against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17, and after that the Tebow watch for 2013 can start.
