Chiefs will fire Romeo Crennel, according to report

Crennel is out as Chiefs head coach after just one season as the team’s head coach.

The Kansas City Chiefs will part ways with head coach Romeo Crennel. He will be fired, officially, sometime on Monday, Dec. 31, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, after the Chiefs finished the season with a disappointing 2-14 record.

Crennel joined the Chiefs in 2010 as the team's defensive coordinator under Todd Haley. When Haley was fired 13 games into the 2011 season, Crennel took over as the interim head coach and led the Chiefs to a 2-1 record, including an upset win over the Green Bay that snapped the Packers' 19-game win streak and ended their quest for a perfect season.

Kansas City removed the interim tag and named Crennel the team's head coach in January of last season, and the Chiefs were expected to have a shot at competing for an AFC Wild Card spot in 2012. Crennel's squad stumbled out of the gates, losing their first two games before an overtime upset of the New Orleans Saints in Week 3. And that's when the team collapsed. The Chiefs went on to lose eight consecutive games, in the middle of which, Crennel turned over his defensive coordinator position to Gary Gibbs.

Crennel also had to deal with tragedy, as he reportedly watched linebacker Jovan Belcher commit suicide at the team's practice facility on Dec. 1.

The Chiefs finished the season with four straight losses, and finished with the team’s worst record since 2008.
