Bears’ return man Devin Hester says he will consider retirement

Chicago Bears’ return man Devin Hester said on Monday that he is considering retiring from the NFL.

USA TODAY Sports

Chicago Bears' kick returner and wide receiver Devin Hester may be calling it a career, as Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports via Twitter, that Hester is considering retiring from the NFL.

Hester saw longtime head coach Lovie Smith fired on Monday as the Bears failed to make the playoffs after a promising 7-1 start to the season. Hester is recognized as one of the best return men to ever play the game, though he has been largely ineffective at receiver throughout his career.

This past season, he was also ineffective as a return man, and at 30-years-old, it’s clear he’s lost a step in speed and explosiveness. Many times this season, Hester did his trademark backtracking to try and find a hole to break open a big return, but was tackled for a loss more often than not in those situations.

He’s also due a roster bonus this off-season, and given Smith’s firing, many feel there is a chance that Hester would be cut if he doesn’t elect to retire.
