Jets announce Tim Tebow will backup Mark Sanchez

With a quarterback controversy brewing in New York, Jets coach Rex Ryan named Tim Tebow his back-up quarterback -- so long as he’s healthy.

At his Wednesday press conference, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan stated that Tim Tebow, if healthy, would back up Mark Sanchez at quarterback. The Jets quarterback position was put in flux in Week 13 when Ryan benched Sanchez in favor of Greg McElroy, who was active as the backup with Tebow injured.

Wednesday morning, Ryan said Sanchez would continue to be the starter as the Jets prepare to play Jacksonvillle in Week 14. Tebow, who was inactive last week, will be the backup as long as he is healthy. He suffered two broken ribs in the Week 10 loss to the Seahawks but played the next week. The Jets then put him on the shelf for past two games, and his status for this week is still up in the air.

The move to McElroy instantly kicked up a quarterback controversy, with reports indicating that Jets owner Woody Johnson preferred the former Alabama QB. Sanchez has struggled mightily as the starter, throwing more interceptions than touchdowns in an offense that has scored more than 20 points just twice this season. But with four games to go, it appears that McElroy is back to the third option -- so long as Tebow is healthy.
