Luke Kuechly Starts On Outside For Panthers

The Carolina Panthers drafted linebacker Luke Kuechly with the ninth overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and have already changed around his position, in a way. Kuechly played the middle linebacker spot in college at Boston College, but was told by the coaching staff he will start out as an outside linebacker, according to the Associated Press.

Before his first NFL practice, Kuechly received No. 59 -- the same number his new coach, Ron Rivera, wore during his nine seasons with the Chicago Bears -- and was told he'll start out playing weakside linebacker. That's a change from the middle linebacker spot Kuechly primarily played at Boston College, where he wore No. 40 and led the nation in tackles the last two seasons.

One of the reasons Kuechly was so highly regarded in the NFL Draft, outside of his raw talent, was the fact that he was a scheme-diverse linebacker who could play all of the linebacker positions, especially in a 4-3 defense.
