In Sports Illustrated NFL writer Peter King's Monday Morning Quarterback column, the veteran writer wrote about touring NFL training camps and sitting down with different quarterbacks for interviews, including an informative session with Drew Brees about his reaction to the Saints' bounty scandal thus far. It's a worthwhile read in its entirety, but there was one newsy tidbit about newly-minted Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning.
Peyton Manning Doesn’t Feel 100 Percent Yet
Manning, as you may recall, missed all of the 2011 season because of neck surgery and was cut by the Colts because they felt they couldn't risk more than $26 million guaranteed on a quarterback they didn't know whether would ever be fully healthy again. Manning is now participating in full practices with the Broncos — King said he looked accurate and could make all his throws — but is operating at less than 100 percent. "I hate it," Manning told King when asked about it.
“Where I’ll be, percentage-wise, I don’t know,” Manning told me. “I don’t know if I’ll feel the way I’ve always felt again. Everybody wonders, ‘Can he get back to where he was?’ That bar was set pretty high. Now, my goal is to feel as good as I possibly can -- right now.”
After sinking five years and $96 million into Manning’s right arm, the Broncos can’t feel too comfortable after seeing that statement. But, based on King’s assessment, Manning should be just fine this year and moving forward.
