With third-string quarterback Matt Blanchard sidelined with a fractured knuckle, the Chicago Bears announced Sunday that they had signed their second quarterback in the past 24 hours. Just a day after the team inked Jordan Palmer, veteran Trent Edwards has signed with the Bears.

The journeyman quarterback has found a home, at least temporarily, in Chicago.

Blanchard was injured during the Bears' 33-28 preseason win over the San Diego Chargers on Thursday night, prompting the team to begin a search for a third passer.
Edwards spent his first four years in the league in Buffalo after the Bills picked him in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. His time with the Bills was hampered by inconsistent play and injuries, and he was waived by the team during the 2010 season. He bounced around the league over the following three years, spending time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles. He was most recently released by the Eagles in mid-April.
During his seven-year career, Edwards has tallied just over 6,000 yards and 26 touchdown passes.
With the additions of Blanchard and Edwards, the Bears now have four healthy quarterbacks on their depth chart, including starter Jay Cutler and backup Josh McCown. Cutler has somewhat of an injury history -- he hasn't played a complete 16-game slate since 2009 -- meaning depth at the position is key for the Bears.
The team also announced on Sunday the release of wide receiver Jerrell Jackson, who was cut to clear a roster spot for Edwards.
