Bills don’t plan to sign another QB even after E.J. Manuel surgery

The Bills are not looking to add another quarterback in the wake of E.J. Manuel’s knee surgery

The Buffalo Bills may be down a quarterback, but they're not searching for a new one. Despite losing potential starter E.J. Manuel for the remainder of the preseason to a knee injury, the team has announced that it does not plan on adding another quarterback to their roster.

Head coach Doug Marrone told reporters that any potential roster addition would become clearer as Manuel’s recovery progresses, but that no such move was being actively pursued.

“We should be able to judge better in 2 weeks when E.J. comes back,” Marrone said, via the team.

Manuel went under the knife for minor surgery after swelling was discovered in his left knee on Saturday, a procedure that will keep him out for the remainder of the preseason.

Manuel, the team's first-round selection in the 2013 draft, has been locked in a tight battle for the starting quarterback job with Kevin Kolb for much of the preseason. While no decision on the part of Marrone had been announced, it was likely that Manuel had the upper hand in the contest after strong performances in his first two preseason appearances. The rookie threw for 199 yards and a pair of touchdowns in wins over the Indianapolis Colts and Minnesota Vikings.

Kolb and Jeff Tuel, an undrafted rookie free agent, are now the team's only healthy options at quarterback. Kolb threw for 111 yards and an interception against the Vikings after missing the preseason opener with a knee injury of his own. Tuel was limited in that game, throwing just three passes, but racked up 212 yards and two scores against the Colts.
