Terrell Thomas’ Injury Involves ACL; Damage Unclear

The New York Giants' quest for a repeat could be coming without cornerback Terrell Thomas, who suffered an ACL injury at training camp over the weekend. It's still unclear exactly the extent of the damage but it's possible that Thomas has torn his ACL for the second consecutive season. A complete tear would end his season; a partial tear could keep open the possibility of a return this year.

As SB Nation’s Big Blue View notes, you have to wonder what this injury will do to not only this season, but his career.

If the surgery reveals another tear, Thomas’ NFL career could be over. No player has ever made it back from three torn ACLs to the same knee. Even if the damage is not that severe, you have to think it will be a long while before Thomas plays in an NFL game again.

In other words, don’t count on major contributions from Thomas this season.

The Giants have said Thomas will undergo a surgery to determine the damage.

“Terrell re-injured his ACL,” said Giants senior vice president of medical services Ronnie Barnes. “At this point, he will most likely undergo an arthroscopic procedure to determine the extent of the injury to the ACL. However, no decision has been made at this point. Terrell is going to consult with Dr. (Arthur) Ting, who performed an allograft reconstruction of the ACL in September.”

The Giants signed Thomas to a four-year deal in free agency, despite the fact he was coming off ACL surgery.
