Jason Witten Cleared To Play In Week 2

Witten suffered a lacerated spleen in the Cowboys’ first preseason game against Oakland and has just recently returned to physical rehab work on the field. Witten has been running, catching passes and working on resistance bands during practice this week.

Over the last eight seasons, Witten has missed only two regular season games while becoming one of the most dependable pass-catching targets in the NFL. In 2011, he had 79 catches, 942 yards and 5 TDs.

For a Dallas offense that has struggled with consistency, his steady hands and blocking ability could be a huge asset in their game against the defending Super Bowl champions.

According to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the good news for Cowboys fans is that his injury will not require surgery:

The bad news is that his streak of consecutive games started, which goes back to the 2006 season, may be coming to an end. That’s never a good sign for a player in a contact sport now on the wrong side of the age 30 barrier.

“Right now I’m doing [all right],” Witten told DallasCowboys.com. “I’m just going to take it a day at a time. Obviously, I’d be hard-pressed to imagine not being out there against the Giants. But there’s no timetable right now.”

Hill confirmed that the injury occurred was result of a vicious hit from Oakland linebacker Ronaldo McClain. Witten missed a few plays after that but did return to catch one more pass before the first-team offense was pulled from the field.
