Packers Roster Cuts: LB Desmond Bishop, 5 Others Placed On IR

The Green Bay Packers have placed linebacker Desmond Bishop on injured reserve as part of their roster cuts to get down the league-mandated 75 players, according to Monday's team press release. The Packers also placed five other players on IR, added two to the physically unable to perform list, and released two others.

Bishop, who suffered a torn hamstring in Green Bay's preseason opener, has been a key component in the Packers' defense for the past two seasons, during which time he averaged 83 tackles and four sacks. Tight end Andrew Quarless, who has also seen plenty of playing time in the past couple of years, was one of the two players to be added to the PUP list. In 23 games and five starts as a Packer, Quarless has hauled in 24 passes for 274 yards and a TD. Defensive end Jarius Wynn is another notable name on the list, as the fourth-year pro was released following a season in which he accumulated 13 tackles and three sacks while appearing in all 16 games.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy addressed the media following the announcement, and seemed stressed about the whole ordeal:

“People don’t really realize I know, I didn’t as an assistant. I didn’t appreciate what goes into making decisions. There is a lot of conversation, and you just hope you are making the right decision as you go about it. So this is the worst time of year, I think, for every head coach. I know it is for me personally.”

Tight end DeMarco Cosby, guard Ray Dominguez, defensive end Johnny Jones, running back Du'ane Bennett and wide receiver Shaky Smithson were the other five players placed on IR, while linebacker Frank Zombo ended up on the PUP list and fullback Jon Hoese was released.
